Drag Queen Costume Ball

At a gala event in Provincetown, Massachusetts entertainers were invited to offer a song from the sets they were performing in clubs around town in the summer of 1987.

The evening also included a Drag Queen Costume Ball – the theme: “Come As Your Favorite Star.” I captured images of costumed individuals and couples who took the invitation to dress as their “Favorite Star”. Many of the costumes were dazzling and likenesses remarkable.

The display was open and liberating for those who stepped into that space. Stereotypes were broken and nearly everyone seemed joyful, proud and wanted to have their picture made. Our culture was not as accepting of authentic sexual identity at that time and the sense of freedom in the late-night seaside air was everywhere.
